Service Rifle 1 2014

Well its that time of year and the competitions start allover again. I have added a course of fire to the relevant section so take a look and get ready. We should have the club gun available plus ammo and a bayonet.

You will need 42 rounds (maybe have a few extras to hand) a couple of chargers (clips,Magazines etc) and a bayonet.

Mr Ball thinks his new L1A1 can be in the classic class but he will have to be in the moderns. Yes I know its an Enfield Service Rifle but it isn’t really in the spirit of the WW2 and earlier stuff. He will complain but that’s part of the fun.

If you haven’t been to one of our SR comps before come along and have a go.

PS – You will need a proper Service Rifle for this sort of thing. We have a category for Classics and one for Modern Rifles

Well there was time for a quick shoot on Sunday. We had fine weather and a hight turn out of nearly 30 people.

As there was a distinct possibility of rain we got stuck in and were mostly out of ammo by 12.30 when we packed up and went home before the promised rain started.

There was a wide variety do firearms present from Rolling Blocks, Classic, and Modern etc. one of the more unusual was a manual L1A1 that we have not seen much of since their banning in the late 80’s. The one in the photo is a legal manually operated version and someone’s new toy. If you look closely examine the shooters eye!

Next stop is the service rifle so see you then.

Just a quick note to wish you all the best of the season. It is raining today and tomorrow so thankfully we are not shooting. Hopefully it will all be sunny in time for the Hero Shoot.

The Hero Shoot will be at 200 yards and we will do (within reason) whatever people want to do on the day so don’t be late and think about what you would like to shoot.

Please renew your membership as soon as possible so we can let some more of the probationers join and plan the years activities.

While you are taking a break (I know the committee need one) take 5 minutes to read the article from the recent NRA Journal regarding Firearms and the police.I am sure they wont mind its reproduction as it provides some important points that you should be aware of in the event of a visit from HMC.

The Christmas Shoot

Well not a huge turn out, reports of colds and other commitments kept some away. Still not a problem as those who did turn out were rewarded with a fun and quick shoot with everyone getting a prize at the end – what could be better?

Once we got going it went smoothly and everyone enjoyed themselves. In the spirit of Christmas there was shared riles and a selection of Mince Pies. There was plenty to do and no hanging around.

There was something for everyone and we will definitely be doing a McSanta (McQueen) pairs again as that was excellent fun. In general shooting in pairs worked well so expect to see it again at some point in the future (Team Service Rifle Anyone)??

The results are in the results page and as the photos show there were plenty of cheerful faces.

Our president Ted Molyneux gave out the prizes and wished us all the seasons greetings and good luck for 2014. Ted is stepping down as President at the AGM as he is reducing his commitments. He has been on the committee since 1943 so we have to thank him for his commitment to the club over the years. He is irreplaceable.

So Happy Christmas and see you at the Hero Shoot.

Membership Renewals and the Christmas Shoot

Its that time of year again and in an effort to get ahead of the game we are sending the membership renewals out later this week. So If you expect one and didn’t get one then let Chris Gordon know and if you have not had one in a couple of weeks let him know as well.

We would really appreciate early renewal so we can confirm the actual members and review how many of the probationer backlog we can accept in 2014.

We wont accept renewals or cash payments on the range (that’s how problems start)

So to the Christmas Shoot and the need to clarify a couple of points.

We are likely to have more members than club guns so if you have a suitable rifle (Scoped or Service Rifle) then please please:-

A) Bring them along

B) Share with other members – its Christmas after all

Not many of you will have a target sighted classic rifle for the round bull timed fire so if you have one – great bring it along and if you don’t then you can use a service rifle (No scoped rifles on that stage)

There has been a suggestion that pairs should be drawn at random out of a hat but this will only work if you all turn up at 9.15 for the draw so that system starts to unravel with latecomers. It is further complicated with random pairings not having the right guns and both wanting to shoot the same gun at the same time.

So, Its just a fun shoot, Pair up with a mate and share the guns with other members. Do a deal over the ammo or buy some off the club.

Don’t forget the wrapped present to the value of £5.00 and ENJOY YOURSELVES

Be prepared to lend a hand with the running of the event.

A damp day but it all went off OK with the new barricades getting a work out (See the photos Section). Results are on the Results page (Where Else?)

Next stop is the Christmas shoot. Remember you will need some guns and a gift to the value of £5.00 (Wrapped) to enter. If you get a prize then remember the big bottle may be the cooking sherry!!

Service Rifle Shoot (Malcolm behind the barricade)

The next shoot is Service Rifle and we are making some changes! We have new barricades to use and as this gives us more options we are running the shoot as part competition and part training.

So Malcolm Dalgleish is going to provide the course of fire around an introduction to barricades. The new barricades are more substantial and allow more shooting positions and rests so we feel some practice may be in order first.

There are options for Standing, Kneeling, Prone, Strong/Weak Shoulder, behind cover etc. This may be a bit complicated under a full competition so some practice is in order first. We hope you will find this a benefit and it may help improve some scores and reduce the number to holes in the target hut that is beginning to resemble a Swiss cheese!

There will be at least three courses of fire at 200 and 1 at 100 yards and so you will need extra ammo for practice. So bring at least 52 rounds and your chargers / Bayonets etc so make the most of this opportunity. We will have allot to get through so the range briefing will be at 9.15.

The Boar Trophy

Well that was quite a day. I must admit I have been worrying about this for weeks thinking about all the things that could go wrong! Well I whilst it pays to keep on one’s toes it went without a hitch.  We had over 32 shooters and as far as I can tell everyone had a good time. We had teams from Bookham, Horsham, Sussex, Surbiton and Chichester.

We shot with teams of three and still had plenty of room for the scoped rifles to have a blast with some fairly loud in one case 300WM’s.

As this shoot is primarily our charity shoot in aid of the Royal British Legion we raised over £200 for the legion and held a 2 minutes silence at 11am. We had in fact made it back to 500 yards by then.

The shoot was capped in fine style by our South African contingent of Franco and Ian who cooked a fantastic Brai (BBQ here) with some stunning Venison Sausages that were well worth the price of admission on their own. Barry Springer kindly provided the Sausages so we will be sending him off hunting again fairly soon after that lot.   The new Pavilion will have a BBQ area so watch out for these events next year.

We have to thank all the shooters who came along and all those who helped run the shoot and move things along. It was a great day and we also organised some fine weather as well.

The Team shoot was won by Horsham who fielded some top men including the individual winner George Cotton who shot a 99.13 closely followed by Martin Woolger with a 99.11 (always the bridesmaid etc) Full results are on the results page.

The Boar Hill

This years shoot on Remembrance Sunday approaches and we are expecting a high turn out. As a club we will be welcoming teams form Horsham, Bookham and Chichester so please make every effort to make our guests welcome.

We will not be running any start of the shoot Zeroing due to the likely high turn out so please have your rifle set up properly before the shoot.

Dave Crispin is unfortunately not well so he will not be able to provide the Burgers and do the cooking. Fear not Barry Springer has co opted Franco and Ian our SA contingent to organise a Brai (that’s a BBQ in the UK) We will have some venison sausages so pray the sun shines and  get in the Queue early to avoid disappointment.

The shoot is in aid of the British Legion and entry is £5.00 per head for all shooters (not just the competition) and you will have to pay for the BBQ as well. Sorry but its all in a good cause.

There will be a 2 minutes silence at 11 so listen for the whistle, hats off and keep quiet.

The Committee will on hand to keep it all moving forward as best we can but give us a hand by being ready and helping where you can.
