Todays Shoot and Service Rifle 1

Unfortunately I couldn’t attend todays shoot due to work commitments but I understand there was a strong turn out despite the cold. Due to further work commitments I can’t run the Service Rifle shoot in two weeks time either (Back from one country and off to another)

So the next shoot will be a 300 Practice I will swap the Calender about and fit the SR1 in later.

Sorry about that.

I do have some pictures from todays shoot.

The Hero Shoot

For the hardy members went to the range today for the year opener Hero Shoot. So named for those who come along in the bad weather in previous years. Fortunately we had good weather for the time of year. We had quite a selection of guns on show from Black Powder Snider Carbines to the latest Nimrod and MARS rifles.

All Good fun

Once a long time ago I met two blokes on a range (Steynning) long since closed. One was a keen advocate of the L1A1 and from what I remember he was about the only one I who could ever shoot one decently.

If you want to know (many, many years later) how make an old man happy, put one in his hands again.

Christmas Shoot Sunday 11 December Update

Great day and very busy. A present for all at the end! Only a few pictures as it was a bit hectic. I recently said on committee that Muzzle Brakes weren’t a problem and then chose to shoot next to Mr Ball as a pair who blasted me with gas (rifle & verbal) and showered Gary and Connots with hot brass! Oh well it is the season of forgiveness. Some greate shooting by all (some a bit dodgy as well).

If you have ever wondered what the delays in the butts are due to then here is your answer.

p1000740

Happy Christmas to all.

Christmas fast approaches and we have to sort out a Christmas Shoot so here is what we have in mind. We have a potentially large number of people to cater for and as it will be cold and/or wet it needs to be something we can shift through at a reasonable  pace so no one has to hang around for too long.

The shoot will be over three distances 100, 200 and 600 yards and shot in pairs so its time to find a friend and or team up with someone on the day. The entry fee will be a wrapped gift to the value of £5.00. No gift, no shoot. If you turn up late then all the friends will be taken as well. We will be starting at 9.30 sharp.

100 yards  Shot on the Gallery Rifle targets 10 shots each on to a standard PL7 targets. These are grouped in pairs and the scores will be no more than 10 shots on each target. Shoot in no more than 3 minutes.

It is surprising how many members cannot either count or hit the correct target.

200 yards will be shot in pairs on a figure 11 and a figure 12 targets both showing at the same time. Again both targets will be up at the same time and you can decide who is the better shot so someone gets to shoot on the smaller target. There will be penalties if you cross fire. There will be a two-minute time limit on this and we will need a butt crew of 8 people per detail.

600 yards electronic targets shot in your pair with a time limit so no one is going to be allowed to take ages.

So that’s the plan. We will finish up at 600 yards and then have a prize giving in the club house. If you want to bring along something else like sausage rolls, mince pies or similar that we can heat up in the oven will be a welcome addition.

You can use any gun you like for the shoot and can use a different rifle for each stage if you like. We may well be able to have the club guns and we have some ammo as well.

We will be sending out the membership renewals soon so early payment helps the club.

Service Rifle 5 Sunday 27 November 2016

Busy day and only time for a short post. Chilly but dry and plenty of good shooting.

Results on the scores page – well shot all. I will work out the results for the year for Service Rifle when I get a minute.

Service Rifle 5 Sunday 27 November 2016

The course of Fire has been posted on the COF page. A further copy is here:-

161127-sr-5-course-of-fire

It helps if you have read the course of fire and are ready for each stage. These shoots can get quite busy and if people are ready then it all moves along much faster and no one has to hang around for too long.  Yes you will have to take a turn in the butts and possibly more than one!

The club rifles have been inspected by Fulton’s for safety and Tim has given them a loving coat of oil. Please look after them if you borrow one.  We have ammunition and if you want to shoot the whole competition you will need to bring at least £40 to cover the 52 rounds you need.

If anyone wants to take some pictures of the event then I am happy to post them. I always have good intentions of taking photos but end up being too busy to take as many as I should. In general we try to avoid a clear picture of shooters faces – Security / DPA and all that!

So that’s all for now – see you next weekend. Pray for decent weather.

The Boar Hill Shoot Sunday 13 November – Update

A fine day with over 35 shooters on the range. We welcomed teams from Wandsworth, Bookham, Horsham, Epsom, Sussex HG and of course our very own Dorking team.

The weather was kind and it was a great day. The standard of shooting was excellent and no matter how I tried to fix the scores I couldn’t make Dorking win. We felt it only fair that we didn’t beat our guests but we may not be so kind next time.  We hope to run more by invitation team TR shoots next year so if you came along as a guest then you are welcome back – get in touch and we will sort something out.

The results were rather hurried as I did them on the range and I have updated the results and reformatted the report. The revised results are here. We did have to make up some of the teams to 4 members by moving some spares to other clubs so if you see your name under another club then that’s why. It was either that or make it teams of three. This only really affects Horsham who only dripped one point with their top three and would have easily won. sorry chaps! – you could have shot for Dorking.

We held the shoot in aid of the Royal British Legion and raised £190.00 for charity along with observing a 2 minutes silence at 11am in memory of the fallen.

Barry was on hand with his famous venison sausages that are home-made and are delicious!

The top shooters were G Palmer and M Woolger both with 100.15 Well shot.

Thanks to all who turned out and made the day a success. We cant do it without you. Massive thanks to Barry for the catering.

The next shoot is Service Rifle in two weeks.

Gallery Rifle Shoot Sunday 6 November Upodate

Great day but a little chilly that cam as a bit of a surprise after the mild weather of late. Lots of different stuff on the point today from .22s to 577/450 Martinis and much in between. A very rare beast was on show. I never thought I would see a street legal one of these. For those of you who don’t know its a famous BAR, Browning Automatic Rifle that served the US army from 1917 to the 1970’s Firing from an open bolt it is an odd sensation to shoot but a great experience.

These Gallery Rifle  / Carbine shoots seem popular so we will try to shoehorn some into the program for next year.

The next shoot is the Rememberance Sunday Boar Hill Trophy – See you then.

The Gallery rifle shoot this weekend is not just for Gallery Rifles as you may find it an opportunity to use the day for zeroing other firearms so don’t feel excluded. These shoots are usually popular and are shot at 100 yards on manual targets.

The general idea is to shoot between 10 and 20 rounds and then the range is cleared and everyone goes and checks and patches their targets ready for the next lot. Our patches keep going missing so please don’t walk off with them. This will need the shooters to be prompt as it will hold the whole thing up if you are slow.

Dont Forget to bring a scope or binos to see how you are doing.

Next week is the annual TR Boar Hill shoot on remberance weekend.

Looking forward I have been thinking about the format of some of our Scoped Rifle shoots next year. We already have the McQueen Shoots and the others are simple TR with a scoped rifle so I think we should change the format of some of these as the current is a bit easy.

What I have in mind is to shoot the scoped rifles at Fig 11, Fig 12 and fig 14 targets at different distances. We use the Fig 14 (Huns head) at 300 yards already so how about fig 12 at 500 and Fig 11 at 600. We have some impressive rifles in the club so it might be nice to stretch them a bit. Anyway I have not figured out the format and organisation of this but if you are interested in this then let me know at some point and we will do some work to see if we can make it work.

The Gallery rifle was an experiment that seems to have been successful so I think we should try something different with scoped rifles.

Anyway that’s for next year – see you on Sunday.

Handicap Cup Sunday 23 October

The Scores are on the Results page – well shot in difficult conditions. the weather was great but the targets were hazy and the sight picture was difficult for TR and still tricky for a scope. That’s my excuse anyway!

Nice day anyway. The next shoot is a Gallery Rifle one at 100 Yards.

See you there.

Service Rifle 4 Sunday 9 October UPDATED

Long day and on a short pass. Scores on the results page. Well shot everyone it was a nice day. I enjoyed it and I hope you all did too. I have been promised some photos so I will post them when I got them.

Now some pictures of the day

These are getting popular – and I want one!!

See you next time.

25 Knight Cup/Gellibrand Shield Sunday 25th September

Update – Sorry forgot to add the scores. They are now on the Results page.

The shoot is 2×15 at 600 shot twice (once for each trophy) We had a decent turnout and I lost count of the number of shooters however not everyone put in a score card. Come on, next time put a score in and dont be shy!

Anyway the 600 & 600 shoot was won overall by Rob Bennett with   143.14 who was well ahead of his nearest rival. The Scoped was overall won by Bob Spottiswoode with147.17.

The TR Comp is two trophies and Rob won both of these with the Scoped individual comps being Knight Cup Neil Butler and Gelliebrand Shield Bob Spottiswoode. Generally it was a pleasant day with no rain and plenty of sun, It was a bit breezy though and that caught a number of us out.

There was an eclectic mix of firearms with AI derivatives proving popular

On a personal note my Black Peltor Electronic Earmuffs were returned  so thank you to whoever had been looking after them!

The next shoot is Service Rifle so get yourselves sorted out for that – see you then.
