The Penguin – Updated

This weekend sees our first comp of the year. It’s the annual match against Horsham Rifle Club and is so names as its often cold.

The shoot is 2 x 10 at 300 with a 303 and 2×10 at 600 with a 7.62. ITs a TR shoot but all are welcome providing you stick to the course of fire. Note we will get all the TR shooters on the first details and segregate the muzzle break shooters to their own details etc.

As the 303 rifles are getting a bit long in the tooth we would hope you are only going to bring along one in good condition that you can hit the target with. We cannot afford to have the equipment damaged.

Update

The shoot went well with a good turn out – too busy to count and we welcomed a number of new faces. The actual match was The Penguin, was shot with 303’s at 300 and that is where the majority of points were lost (excluding Rob B who managed a 48.6 with a 100-year-old SMLE). Horsham won with a score of 344.30 against the home team with 336.14.  Scores on the Results page.

It is fair to say that all the Horsham members are also Dorking members so we could swap them about and change the results accordingly.

Anyway everything worked, it wasnt cold and we didn’t get wet so job done.

We have the AGM and work party coming up but there may be some changes in the program so keep an eye on the web site for announcements.

The next shoot is a scoped rifle one and we are going to try some different targets, Fig 14/12 & 11’s to make it a bit more challenging.  Having said we are going to change things I now have to work out what we will do exactly. IT will be a bit experimental so be prepared to be flexible and to also do the on/off the point and marker changes quickly so we don’t get held up too much.

Todays Shoot and Service Rifle 1

Unfortunately I couldn’t attend todays shoot due to work commitments but I understand there was a strong turn out despite the cold. Due to further work commitments I can’t run the Service Rifle shoot in two weeks time either (Back from one country and off to another)

So the next shoot will be a 300 Practice I will swap the Calender about and fit the SR1 in later.

Sorry about that.

I do have some pictures from todays shoot.

Reloading For Beginners

Graeme Cole has offered to run an Introduction to Reloading evening in March depending on the interest. I know a number of you are interested in this subject so if you are then contact Graeme at the address below and we will organise the details depending on the interest. It will be held at the club house.

graememcole@gmail.com

Graeme intends to discuss the following topics and get your started on the basics:-

1 . The advantages of home loading

  1. Basic principles of ballistics and reloading
  2. Safety principles . Manufacturers load recommendations. Black powder reloading differences.
  3. Demonstrate case preparation and single stage reloading.
  4. Advice on available products
  5. Handout on suggested suppliers of components.
  6. Adjourn to local pub for debrief

Starting at say 7 pm one weekday evening and finishing at about 9pm. Debrief after this.

Sounds like an excellent idea so contact Graeme to register your interest.

The next shoot is a Practice and it will be a Gallery Rifle style shoot at 100 yards.

2017 Programme

We have some provisional dates for next year. These are subject to change and we may well move things around depending on circumstances.

The AGM is provisionally booked for 12 March 2017 at 9.30 am. It’s a non shooting day but it is followed by a work party so there will be plenty to do.

The details are on the Programme page along with downloadable shooting records in PDF & Excel

Christmas Shoot Sunday 11 December Update

Great day and very busy. A present for all at the end! Only a few pictures as it was a bit hectic. I recently said on committee that Muzzle Brakes weren’t a problem and then chose to shoot next to Mr Ball as a pair who blasted me with gas (rifle & verbal) and showered Gary and Connots with hot brass! Oh well it is the season of forgiveness. Some greate shooting by all (some a bit dodgy as well).

If you have ever wondered what the delays in the butts are due to then here is your answer.

p1000740

Happy Christmas to all.

Christmas fast approaches and we have to sort out a Christmas Shoot so here is what we have in mind. We have a potentially large number of people to cater for and as it will be cold and/or wet it needs to be something we can shift through at a reasonable  pace so no one has to hang around for too long.

The shoot will be over three distances 100, 200 and 600 yards and shot in pairs so its time to find a friend and or team up with someone on the day. The entry fee will be a wrapped gift to the value of £5.00. No gift, no shoot. If you turn up late then all the friends will be taken as well. We will be starting at 9.30 sharp.

100 yards  Shot on the Gallery Rifle targets 10 shots each on to a standard PL7 targets. These are grouped in pairs and the scores will be no more than 10 shots on each target. Shoot in no more than 3 minutes.

It is surprising how many members cannot either count or hit the correct target.

200 yards will be shot in pairs on a figure 11 and a figure 12 targets both showing at the same time. Again both targets will be up at the same time and you can decide who is the better shot so someone gets to shoot on the smaller target. There will be penalties if you cross fire. There will be a two-minute time limit on this and we will need a butt crew of 8 people per detail.

600 yards electronic targets shot in your pair with a time limit so no one is going to be allowed to take ages.

So that’s the plan. We will finish up at 600 yards and then have a prize giving in the club house. If you want to bring along something else like sausage rolls, mince pies or similar that we can heat up in the oven will be a welcome addition.

You can use any gun you like for the shoot and can use a different rifle for each stage if you like. We may well be able to have the club guns and we have some ammo as well.

We will be sending out the membership renewals soon so early payment helps the club.

Gallery Rifle Shoot Sunday 6 November Upodate

Great day but a little chilly that cam as a bit of a surprise after the mild weather of late. Lots of different stuff on the point today from .22s to 577/450 Martinis and much in between. A very rare beast was on show. I never thought I would see a street legal one of these. For those of you who don’t know its a famous BAR, Browning Automatic Rifle that served the US army from 1917 to the 1970’s Firing from an open bolt it is an odd sensation to shoot but a great experience.

These Gallery Rifle  / Carbine shoots seem popular so we will try to shoehorn some into the program for next year.

The next shoot is the Rememberance Sunday Boar Hill Trophy – See you then.

The Gallery rifle shoot this weekend is not just for Gallery Rifles as you may find it an opportunity to use the day for zeroing other firearms so don’t feel excluded. These shoots are usually popular and are shot at 100 yards on manual targets.

The general idea is to shoot between 10 and 20 rounds and then the range is cleared and everyone goes and checks and patches their targets ready for the next lot. Our patches keep going missing so please don’t walk off with them. This will need the shooters to be prompt as it will hold the whole thing up if you are slow.

Dont Forget to bring a scope or binos to see how you are doing.

Next week is the annual TR Boar Hill shoot on remberance weekend.

Looking forward I have been thinking about the format of some of our Scoped Rifle shoots next year. We already have the McQueen Shoots and the others are simple TR with a scoped rifle so I think we should change the format of some of these as the current is a bit easy.

What I have in mind is to shoot the scoped rifles at Fig 11, Fig 12 and fig 14 targets at different distances. We use the Fig 14 (Huns head) at 300 yards already so how about fig 12 at 500 and Fig 11 at 600. We have some impressive rifles in the club so it might be nice to stretch them a bit. Anyway I have not figured out the format and organisation of this but if you are interested in this then let me know at some point and we will do some work to see if we can make it work.

The Gallery rifle was an experiment that seems to have been successful so I think we should try something different with scoped rifles.

Anyway that’s for next year – see you on Sunday.

Handicap Cup Sunday 23 October

The Scores are on the Results page – well shot in difficult conditions. the weather was great but the targets were hazy and the sight picture was difficult for TR and still tricky for a scope. That’s my excuse anyway!

Nice day anyway. The next shoot is a Gallery Rifle one at 100 Yards.

See you there.

Gravett & Marlow Cups 11 September

Just time for a quick update

Scores are on the results page in pdf and Excel formats. (the results for the last McQueens have been updated to pdf as well)

Well shot – over 30 shooters attended, only scores seem to have come in from the TR shooters and as stated we welcomed teams from the Sussex County Rifle Association and Bookham (who were there after all). All are welcome and it was great to see so many enjoying the facilities.

To those who came along today as guests – I hope you enjoyed yourselves and you are welcome again. We are expecting a large turnout for the Remembrance day shoot in November.

Top shooter was our very own Mr Cotton with a 150.23. Sussex won the team shoot with the Sussex A making 582.66 against Dorking’s 568.57.

The next shoot is TR and all are welcome to that so see you then.

Pass has expired so got to dash

Scoped Rifle Results

Great turn out today 21 score cards handed in ane many more shooters came along for a blast as well – Not sure how many as there were too many to count. The work and effort yesterday paid off and we had all 4 targets working without a hitch so great work all.

The shooting was decent and the top score went to Alistair S with a score of 149.27 Barry was second with 148.21 There were two more scores of 148.17 from Vince and me but he won third place on a 600 countback finishing 5,V,5 and i finished V,4,V – Vince I know you are watching – I don’t always fix the scores!

However having said that this was round 2 of the scoped Rifle shoot and the overall winner of those who put in a score for both events with 293.29 (X300) was er,me. So Vince perhaps you are right. The scores are on the results page and no, I don’t fiddle them.

We had some fun as well and Phil had a new toy that we had to try out it’s a 5.56 MARS Trigger

release VZ58 –

IMG_0599

Means the trigger on the first pull releases the working parts forward and then a second pull fires. Its a lot of fun and we only wish Phil has bought along more ammo for us!

There was a big pile of sandbags in the butts – they needed shifting.

IMG_0598

The committee has discussed how to move these for ages and we have had many suggestions of mechanical means and witchcraft / helicopters etc. In the end it was a very old-fashioned human chain. We did this in between 300 and 600 stages (that way everyone who was present got to help!)

IMG_0602IMG_0600

Two lines filling the butts completely and we shifted 4 pallets worth of sandbags in about 15 minutes with very little effort and no cost. Machinery? Pah! people power.

Many thanks to all who enjoyed the shooting and came to help. It makes the club what it is.

I hope you all continue to enjoy it.
