The Boar Hill

This years shoot on Remembrance Sunday approaches and we are expecting a high turn out. As a club we will be welcoming teams form Horsham, Bookham and Chichester so please make every effort to make our guests welcome.

We will not be running any start of the shoot Zeroing due to the likely high turn out so please have your rifle set up properly before the shoot.

Dave Crispin is unfortunately not well so he will not be able to provide the Burgers and do the cooking. Fear not Barry Springer has co opted Franco and Ian our SA contingent to organise a Brai (that’s a BBQ in the UK) We will have some venison sausages so pray the sun shines and  get in the Queue early to avoid disappointment.

The shoot is in aid of the British Legion and entry is £5.00 per head for all shooters (not just the competition) and you will have to pay for the BBQ as well. Sorry but its all in a good cause.

There will be a 2 minutes silence at 11 so listen for the whistle, hats off and keep quiet.

The Committee will on hand to keep it all moving forward as best we can but give us a hand by being ready and helping where you can.

See you there.

Odds and Ends

We will shortly be able to reopen the club membership as Chris Gordon has kindly agreed to become Membership Secretary.  Chris is Joined on the Committee by Barry Springer who has also kindly agreed to help with running the club. We are grateful to both of these individuals as it can be a big task to keep everything going in the right direction. We are after all volunteers.

We will shortly be adding some signage to the car park in respect of legal notices but members and visitors are reminded that-

The users of the clubs car park and facilities do so at their own risk and the club or committee will not accept any liability for any accidents, Damage or loss Incurred.

The pavilion project is still moving forward along with the other range developments and we will keep you informed when there is progress to report.

Handicap Cup

Well it was a bit of a wash out and due to low demand and horrible weather the competition was cancelled. Some hardy shooters shot from 600 and dived back into the hut for shelter.

The targets didn’t play up in the bad weather so that’s a good sign and we will sort out some Gazebos at some future point once we have the pavilion built so we have somewhere to sotre them.

On a Brighter note Chris Gordon has agreed to act and Membership Secretary so once he has got his head round it we should be able to re open the club to probationary members as we have a bit of a backlog of people wanting to join.

As ever we will keep you informed.

Membership Secretary Needed

This is an appeal from the committee. We need a membership secretary to sort out the new membership applications and keep the records up to date. The current record is held electronically and it’s not too bad a job but we are all busy with other projects and could do with a hand. We have had a number of applications from new shooters and from friends of existing members that we have currently refused due to the need of an extra pair of hands.
Can you help?
We will support you with the tasks as much as we can so please think hard about how you can help the club.
Contact us using the contact form on the membership page.
Thanks for your support

Handicap Cup 13 October

The forthcoming Handicap Cup is going to be slightly amended to make it more practical and easier to administer. So instead of 300 / 300 / 500 and a strange handicap system that no one understands we are going to have a more normal Queens 2 shoot.

This will therefore be a 2 & 10 at 300, 500 and 600 yards. There will be a TR and a scoped Rifle competition. Depending on the turn out this year we may introduce a classification system for TR in the future similar to the NRA Classification (X,A,O & T). For now we are going to keep it simple.

If case anyone wants to know what is happening with the development of the hut this has been handed over to an independent project manager to sort out Building Control, Tenders, Plans and the Construction. This should ensure it is done correctly, transparently and no individual or body can be accused of exerting any undue influence on the proceedings.

We will keep you advised as and when we have anything to add.

If you have any questions then don’t forget to ask.

Practice Shoot Sunday 29 September

Well the forecast is reasonable so fingers crossed. We are at 500 yards for a practice so I expect it will be fairly busy. That being the case we will be asking for additional volunteers to help with Range Officer duties so please help if you can. We will show you what to do an if you have an NRA RCO Qualification that will help.

We will have some limited supplies of ammo but no club rifles as Mike is working. So bring your own (Zeroed) Rifle or chat up a mate and see if you can borrow one on the day.

See you there ( you might even want to try setting up or putting away!)

Well we had the shoot. It was a quick one with everyone having a chance to shoot what they wanted and all went off without a hitch. The attached photo shows that if you forget your breach flag then there are other options. I bet you wont leave this one on the point.

303 Trophy

We had a fair turnout for today’s shoot but not too many takers for the 303 TR competition. It should have been at 300 and 500 but, how shall I put it, (summons tact) the shooting with the 303’s didn’t warrant falling back to 500 given that we have just had all the targets refurbished. Mike and Andy from FSL would have a fit so we elected to stay at 300.

The possibility of rain was another factor. As it was there was room for everyone to have a shoot and we were all off the range before the rain came in.

We will have to re think this event for future years and update it to the more appropriate course of fire/ distance. The results are on the results page (where else) but don’t feel you have to look at them. It isn’t easy shooting a 60-year-old gun on a target sized for modern rifles but keeping them on the target was hard enough (That’s my excuse and I’m sticking to it).

The next shoot is a 500 practice but please have your rifles properly zeroes before you come along. Whilst we can often (don’t count on it) have a couple of shots at the start of the shoot to make sure you are on this is not the same as having a proper centered zero.

You can only properly zero your rifles on a 25 yard zero range or at 100 off a rest (i.e. at Bisley) when you can take the time to zero the rifle to the ammunition, change the foresight heights / Blades etc. There is no substitute for doing it properly and it will save time and frustration on range days. We should have an update on the Pavilion project fairly soon so keep a watch on the web site.

We are going to have a for sale page for members to notify other members of items they wish to sell. The club will offer this to members but takes no responsibility for any part of any sale. it us purely up to you to deal with on a face to face basis.so if you have anything to sell then send details t:-

ddrccttee@btopenworld.com

And we will see what we can put on the site.

1 September Garvett & Marlow Cup

Well we had better call this one the Chichester, Bookham & Dorking Team Shoot. We had over 35 shooters and this in itself is something of a record. Invited teams from Chichester and Bookham shot alongside the home teams and there was enough to make 5 teams of 4.

The results are on the results page and photos on the photos page with the top team being Dorking A (581.66) closely followed by – well look up the results I can’t repeat them all here. George Cotton shot an impressive 150.21 (he complained about some dropped V’s and funnily enough didn’t get much sympathy)!

We have wanted to the the facilities to a point where we can invite other clubs for a shoulder to shoulder competition and are delighted that Bookham and Chichester could join us so we will definitely do that again (the Boar Hill on Remembrance Day is an obvious one for that).

I think I can safely say that everyone enjoyed themselves and the results show some excellent scores. The new seating at 500 was very welcome and will be added to 300 and 200 in due course.

For me it was a joy to be able to have somewhere to put your kit to sort it out and not get covered in mud. Many years ago I said you should be able to walk up the range in a pair of slippers. Well that wouldn’t be practical but deck shoes are just fine. We have come along way with the range this year so thanks to all who put the positive effort into the club to move it forward and for those who turn up, shoot, smile and make it all worth while.

To those who said ‘We don’t need that’ it turns out we did need it, and what a difference it has made.

The next shoot is the 303 trophy at 300 and 500 with categories for 303 rifles, SRa, SRb and Scoped.

Sunday’s Shoot

Just a quick update to let you know that there will be no club riffles available on Sunday (Mike is elsewhere) we will have 7.62 ammo available on the day.

The shoot is TR with teams from Chichester and Bookham so please help our visitors and promote the club accordingly.  The course of fire is 2 & 15 at 300 and 600 unless the team captains a decide to amend it on the day to 2 & 10 at 3/5/6. ( it’s only two extra rounds) but this will depend on numbers and requirements.

In case there is any misunderstanding all members are welcome but if you are not shooting the comp you will need to follow the course of fire.  We intend to start at 9.30 prompt so there will not be time for any pre shoot zeroing at 100 yards so please make sure your rifle has a zero for each range.

Scoped Rifle

Well no posts for a bit a and a leaking boiler here will shorten this one!  However a brief report on today’s shoot. Primarily this was the clubs Scoped Rifle shoot and a chance for the scoped boys to show just how good they are!

The main competition was F class so to make it interesting 500 was shot on 200 targets and 600 on 300 targets. This makes them ridiculously small and very hard to hit. Mike and Guy both got 74’s at 500 so that was an excellent score. Less to say about the 600 but Mike wins the cup. If we can find it then he can have it!!

The less brave (more sensible) shot on the normal size targets and there were some TR shooters as well. All the classes got along and we had a good day staying largely dry.

The results are in the results folder and there are some photos as well.

The targets have been completely rebuilt and and now have holes all over them. We are going to have to be much firmer with shooters who cannot hit the target within 3 shots. Get Your Rifle Properly Zeroed for the distance!

The target rebuild has improved reliability and the new faces are probably going to be more durable as there is no ‘black’ to shot out rather a different sized hole and you use the target rubber as the aiming mark. See the photo section and try helping set up or put away and see for yourself the improvements.

The next shoot is a TR competition with invited teams form Bookham and Chichester. There will not be time for plinking or zeroing at 9.30.
