Scoped Rifle Shoot

With the movement of all the gear from the 600 yard hut to the clubhouse and the 200 hut or Butts it took us a while to find all the bits we needed to get going so apologies for the  late start. We will probably have the odd delay as the club house moves towards its conclusion. There are some more pictures on the Pictures page showing the interior that is now plastered and ready for the electrical fittings and plumbing etc.  The roof is on and the cladding and doors should be fitted soon.

Anyway the shooting was a bit breezy and a number of us had flyers at 500. Still if you are young and keen like a certain Alistair Springer who managed a 148.21 it wasnt a problem – so well shot.

Sunny and peaceful day with no drama – what more could we want.

Results are on the page, pictures are on that page so help yourself. Any mistakes in the results are mine but I am a bit pressed today!

The next shoot is Classic McQueen. don’t forget the work party on the day before. More details will be posted here closer the time (see also the previous post.)

 

Grand Pavillion Opening with Free Wine and BBQ Saturday 25 April (AKA Work Party)

Well not really but it got your attention – the event is in fact a work party.

This is an appeal to all club members who want to ‘put something back’ and assist with the maintenance of the club. Yes its work party time! We have a number of jobs that need doing and it is not worth employing a contractor when we have so many willing members who are keen to assist (!)

George, Frank and Tim are coordinating repairs to the Target Store Roof. Whilst the roof is in poor condition the remainder of the structure has some life left in it so we are going to replace the roof and rig up some basic lighting. If there is time then the application of some sort of preservative would help its long-term prospects as well.

We will be conducting some tests on the wiring of the targets to iron out any glitches prior to the arrival of the new targets (and another reason to improve the target store).

Along-side these two key tasks we have the following to attend to:-

Repair the current hand-held targets where necessary
Design and construct the new manual targets for the forthcoming 100 yard carbine shoot.
Apply wood preservative or similar to the range benches and tables
Cut back some vegetation from around the butts area
Dig out a small trench at the back of the Targets to reduce the amount of water draining into the butts
A general tidy up of the butts area.

There are tools on site but if you have your own then this will help. We will need members who volunteer to do some painting to have a suitable brush or two as we can’t predict how many we will need and a suitable receptacle for the creosote etc.

Some items mentioned on the list are
Spade, Shovel, Saw, Loppers (Short and long handle), Broom (to lean on!) paint kettle or homemade similar container, paint brushes.

Above all willing hands aplenty.
If you could help please let us know and what you would like to specialise in. The more help we have then the better the result will be and the earlier we will finish. We do have a limit on vehicles parked on the range itself but providing it is dry enough we should be able to shuttle heavier kit up the range as required in a vehicle.

Service Rifle 2 Updated

A damp morning but not nearly as bad as it could have been so a reasonable turn out given the conditions and the clocks changing. We have stuck with the 5 detail format as this seems to be popular. Some different courses of fire were added to keep shooters on their toes and remind them to count!

We have to congratulate Connor (again) who proves his previous performance with the club gun and Partizan ammo was not a fluke so, well shot. It confirms that the shooter makes the difference.

We have the results on the results page and the pictures page has been updated with the latest of the club house. It is well on the way to being finished with the windows being in so we are well on the way to completion hopefully in May.

We have a problem caused in part by the weather – the need to keep the score sheet dry, – some inaccurate record keeping by the range officers (yada yada yada). I have to issue an apology to Vincent Guy who noticed once the results were posted that he had only been given a score of 2 for Practice 4. Now Paul U had a jam on that detail and he re-shot. The score of 2 was radioed back and made its way to the score sheet in the wrong box. Vince is a good shot and that detail being at 100 yards was relatively easy so we don’t have an accurate score for Vince.

If you take his average for the day then it would be a score of 23 for that detail and he probably scored more than that so he is probably the winner. I can’t change the actual scores as I would be making it up so in future (and this may cause  embarrassment to some) the RO will call out the scores when they come back so we can handle any protests at the time and save this happening again.

So apologies to all (especially to Vince) we will try to do better next time.

 

Garrick & Whyte Cup 16 March 2015

The results for todays shoot are on the results page and everyone had a decent shoot despite the damp conditions. Many thanks to Sid who replaced the sensor on Target 2 giving us a full complement of targets.

The club house construction continues with most of the improvements being inside in terms of flooring and partitions etc. The  verandah floor should go on soon as the supports and gravel base are in place. AS you can see from the photo the roof is on and completed so we can make significant progress internally.

McQueen Modern Round 1 2015

The weather was supposed to be bad but it turned out nice and we had a good attendance with plenty of shooting and no rain.  The scores are on the results page and before you think they are  lower than last time we had to shoot at 300 yards on 200 yard faces so it was a smaller scoring rings. Some impressive shooting all round and a great day.

A nice big verandah for those wet days and visions of hot coffee in the winter – not long now!

If you have not shot the McQueen then this rather wobbly video may help you see what it’s all about and encourage you to come along and have a go. We have a club Accuracy International AE with a decent Sightron scope so there is no excuse!

The next shoot is TR Arthur Whyte / Garrick Cup, We may get Chichester along to liven up the competition a bit.

The Penguin Team Shoot & 303 Trophy

The targets worked and the sun shone! So that made it a good day for a shoot in February. To be fair the sun was a bit of a pain as it was right in your face at 500 yards, it made the targets difficult to see. Didn’t seem to slow some people down though and some impressive scores were submitted.

The Horsham Team won the Penguin again but this time it was not a total thrashing and there was only a 5 point difference between the two teams. Rob Bennett was the top shot with an overall score of 140.12 for one 303 shoot (300x) and two with a 7.62 (300x & 500x)

The 303 Trophy was won by Rob Bennett (Again) with an 81.5 but Mark Pescud got an 81.4 and Martin Woolger  an 80.4 so it was tight at the top.

Well shot to all who came along and enjoyed the day. Than ks to all those who helped out and lent a hand – it’s always welcome.

The club house is coming along and we hope to have this mostly finished towards the end of April. The next objectives are the restoration of the 600 yard firing point. A full program of work on the targets and repairs to the roof of the target shed.

Practice Shoot 1st February

Well that was chilly, especially for all those who turned out at 8am to help with the targets. We have traced problems to the communication between the targets and the firing point together with part of the mains supply. Luckily Sid was on site who is an electrical engineer so he deserved a big thank you from all of us for his assistance.

We got the targets running and this should be ok until the new ones arrive and we can set up the new targets and re wire the supplies with more up to date connectors.

After the investigations we got off to a later than normal start but the 29 members present has a decent and trouble free shoot thereafter.

And the club house?  Coming along nicely!

The next shoot is the match against Horsham AKA the Penguin.

303 at 300 and 7.62 at 300 or 500 – it may change on the day.

Sundays shoot & Notices

Notices – The club house project is proceeding and the roof trusses are now on the building. All are reminded that the construction site is off-limits to all and no access is allowed.  Its part of the contract and health and safety so keep out.

AGM – Provisionally booked for Friday 27 February at the Dorking Christian Centre 8 pm

Sundays Shoot – It’s in the program as a practice at 300 and 500 but as you know the targets are playing up. It looks as if the damp has got into the electrics and this is disrupting the communication between the butts and firing points. We will be at the range early to see if some remedial work can be completed to make them useable in the short-term. If we get them working we will stick to the published shoot and if not then it may be manual targets at 300.

Longer term the targets themselves are over 10 years old and two of them are past it. We have ordered 4 new targets but these have to be built and shipped from Norway. We will be upgrading the connectors and other components as well. Essentially the target hut is damp and this does not suit the electrical connections.

So we will do what we can and be prepared to be flexible on the day.

Shooting Records – We have provided an updated shooting record for use this year. The format of the front page is the same but there is a new page 2 with space for you to add your firearm details in full and then on page 1 you add the number of the gun you are shooting.

All Shooting records should be on the new format if you want us to sign them.

If you want to use add the firearm details electronically the form is provided in word format as well as pdf – you can thenuse the page 2 in future years etc.
