Firearms Consultation & Fees

Please take a look at the government proposal over fees. There is a short survey at the end.

One way or another it will affect all of us. I have added a message I got from the BSSC for your information. The decision is yours.

The following is from David Penn of the British Shooting Sports Council:-

Dear All,

Please do respond robustly in favor of the proposal. The proposed fees reflect inflation since 2001 and take into account likely future increased efficiency using the ‘eCommerce’ computerised application system currently under development. One fee (for a variation) will actually be reduced.

What is certain is that this represents a far better deal than the £200 FAC fee being touted by Labour.

With best wishes.

Service Rifle 5 23 November Update & Results

Congratulations to the hardy few who turned out for the shoot. Not many but enough to do two full details of the COF and to give us a decent albeit wet shoot.

Well shot Graham Cole who managed an excellent 114 shooting a SMLE Sniper (without the scope fitted) A lovely rifle and worth turning up for just to see it. If it were mine it would never come out in the wet!

Was it worth it? well yes better than sitting around at home despite the fact that it will take longer to dry the kit out than to shoot. My No 4 needed a complete strip to get all the water out of the crevices, still its an opportunity to give it a decent clean. I just hope I can remember where all the fiddly little screws went!

The whole range is waterlogged so lets hope it dries out in time for the Scoped Rifle shoot in two weeks time. Scores on the results page.

The Boar Trophy

Thanks to all of you who turned up today. We had 36 shooters and teams from Horsham, Leatherhead, Bookham, Epsom, Surbiton,  Chichester and of course Dorking.

The weather was kind with sunshine all day despite the terrible rain all week. The low winter sun made the 500 yard shooting very difficult for most of us and it was a very gloomy sight picture.

The top individual shot was George Cotton with an impressive score of 100.16 and he captained the winning team of Horsham with an overall score of 386.45.

Barry and his helpers Franco and Alistair manned an excellent BBQ with the famous Venison Sausages donated by Barry for the day so a big thank you to them.

The shoot as ever is in aid of the Royal British Legion and we held the traditional two minutes silence at 11am. We raised £236 for charity so a success all round.

The results are on the relevant page and apologies if I have missed anyone or spelt their names wrong. I was working from a score sheet supplied by someone else (that’s my excuse).

The Boar Trophy Sunday 9 November

Tomorrows shoot is the annual Remembrance Sunday Boar Trophy. We hold this event in aid of the Royal British Legion and all proceeds go to charity.

The shoot is primarily for Target Rifle Teams (of 4) and we have teams coming so far from Bookham, Epsom, Horsham and of course the home team. Others teams are and individuals are welcome. Its 2 x 10 at 300 and 500 yards.

There will be a BBQ with some of Barry’s famous venison Sausages that went down a storm last year. I fear the weather may not be as kind to us as it was last time but we may get lucky on the day.

There will be a charge of £5.00 per head for all and non members will pay a further £5.00 range fee. All proceeds go to charity.

We will hold a two-minute silence at 11am.

See you tomorrow.

Handicap Cup 26 October – Results posted

Tomorrows Shoot is in the Calender as a 2*7 at 300 & 500 but that seems a bit light for a day out when there a decent weather forecast.

To get a better day out of it we will make it 2*10 at 300 and 500 with the possibility of an extra 500 detail to make up the comp score out of 150. Tim Brooking will be organising the day so please remember to give him a hand with the Range officer duties and setting up/putting away.

This is an excellent opportunity to get some practice in for the Boar Trophy that is our main annual shoot and we have teams from other clubs invited.

This is principally a Target Rifle Competition (others are welcome) so lets see some support from the TR contingent in the club. Enjoy

The are now on the Results page

Scoped Rifle 1

Well we finished up and had a working party on the butts before the rain set in so that’s a definite plus.  We were shooting a 2*15 at 300 & 500 on 200 and 300 yard faces respectively. Given the significantly smaller targets (Particularly at 500) the scores were pretty good.

The targets didn’t play up so hopefully we have sorted out that problem so fingers crossed they behave for a while. Longer term we will need to do a complete overhaul of the butts area, target huts, and the target lifter frames before we invest in any new target kit but that’s for next year. We expect the main contractor to be back on site fairly soon to get on with the pavilion build so we are managing to move things forward.

A big thanks to all those who stayed behind and helped with the work on the targets and tidied up the butts area. It is much appreciated. Some photos below.

The results are on the relevant page and the top score was from a Mr No Name. A number of cards were handed in without a total on them (thanks) and the top score had no name on it either.  Being decent, (I could have eliminated the card and made myself first) by a process of elimination based on the number of cards and the range register the top shooter was Tom Jarman. Well done but put your name on it next time.

Scoped Rifle Shoot on Sunday

Part one of the clubs scoped rifle shoot is on Sunday consisting of 2*15 at 300 and 500 yards. The details will be shot on 200 and 300 yard target faces (just to make it interesting – and to cut down on the number of 75*15’s)

When we finish the competition there will be a work party to do some more work on the targets. We sorted out the front of the targets last time and this time we have to take the back off targets 1,2 and 3 and clear out some accumulated debris. These are heavy and take at least two people to manage the rear rubber so if you can stay on for a bit and help out it would be appreciated. Many hands make light work and all that!

See you Sunday

Rang Update & Scoped Rifle Shoot

Firstly a big thank you to all those who turned out to help with the targets today. We got the problem sorted by 9am and started at the normal time. It seems the rubber was a bit loose so we retensioned that and it all seemed fine. No odd shots and no sound sensor errors.

We have more to do on the targets and once the club house is sorted then the whole target hut needs rebuilding, the target lifters replaced and the targets overhauled. It is the intention to have some spare targets so we can have one or two being serviced. Still that’s a way off in the future. The good news is that is all worked and we shot as normal.

The scope on the club AE has been replaced and is now zeroed. The new 6-24 side focus Sightron has an excellent reticule and is a pleasure to shoot. It has given the rifle a new lease of life and I am sure it will be a popular choice for the forthcoming scoped rifle shoot.

The next shoot is the scoped rifle shoot and will be 2*15 at 300 and 500 yards on 200 & 300 targets respectively.

We have further good news on the hut rebuild. The footings are now in and we should be able to get the build going fairly soon.

Fingers corssed it all goes smoothly next time

Targets

We have found out a bit more about the target problem as two volunteers kindly spent most of this afternoon takeing target 4 apart. The long and the short of it is that the void where the sound sensors sit contained a large amount of debris that has to be cleared.

Hopefully this will now work better / reliably so it is fairly clear that we need to do this to the other targets. This takes several people and can’t be done with shooting in progress so as a result there will be more work party on Sunday than shooting.

It is vital to have the targets working properly so I hope you will be understanding and come along and help. We will need the whole target / butts area tidying up while the targets are dismantled and repaired.

We will do some testing first then see what we can do in the way of repairs so we can all get reliable use in the longer term.

You may want to bring a few tools with you as well as a gun.

Shoot on Sunday 28 September

We have had some work done on the targets but are not entirely sure if the problems we have been experiencing have been fixed. We are therefore cancelling the scheduled competition and having a practice at 200 and POSSIBLY 300 yards. With potentially unreliable targets it isn’t reasonable to attempt a competition.

Those of you who were at the last shoot will know the drill, report to the RO any of the stray 1’s that happen (they go in the same places as opposed to simply bad shots), together with any sound sensor errors. We will build up a further report of any defects for consideration by the manufacturers (if needs be).

We may also break from shooting at some point and take apart one or two of the targets to see if we can find anything inside that is amiss.

So it’s not a free for all practice and we would like some help in monitoring the problems so we can correct them and get back to normal.

Please therefore  bring something accurate as we need to make sure the flyers are obvious.

Hopefully we can fix the problem or at least get a better understanding of it so please be prepared to be flexible.
